Cracked Grout

There can be a lot of potential issues when it comes to cracked grout. in my honest opinion, here are 3 of the most common reasons why.

The #1 cause of grout failing is home settling. Homes built in the winter months deal with settling because the ground underneath them thaws in the spring causing the new construction to move slightly. Once the house is fully settled- the problem should stop.

Most other cases I see and deal with have the cracking along the conjunction of the sub-floor. If that sub floor is not secured 100%, you will have movement in your floor and cracking grout or broken tiles will occur. You must remove the tile, grout and underlayment to access the damage.

Malpractice or a bad install could be another factor. Poor craftmanship is a part of the industry and unfortunately some people have to deal with it. If you mix the material too wet or dry alongside not properly installing it, you could make the grout brittle.
